Join us for our Pride In Place Scotland webinar, 2nd March, 10-11AM.

Pride in Place introduces long-term neighbourhood funding across Scotland at a time when councils, communities and partners are already working within complex, resource-constrained local systems. While the scale of investment is significant, it is best understood as a contribution to place rather than a complete strategy for local transformation.

Its impact will depend less on what it funds in isolation and more on how well local partners support connections with the wider ecosystem of plans, partnerships and investment already shaping the place. Scotland already has deep experience in place-based working, community planning and partnership delivery. The leadership challenge now is ensuring Pride in Place can draw on and strengthen these existing foundations, rather than unintentionally creating parallel structures that add pressure or fragmentation.

This raises important system-level questions for local leaders and partners:

  • How can Pride in Place funding be supported by good local evidence and shared priorities, helping communities make informed choices about long-term impact, focusing on catalytic investments that shift long-term outcomes rather than simply funding visible or easily announced projects?

  • How can this investment be aligned with other funding streams, timelines and governance arrangements so that it supports a coherent local strategy rather than operating as a standalone programme?

  • What enabling conditions need attention, including delivery capacity, shared local intelligence, trusted relationships and effective governance, to ensure funding lands in strong local systems rather than overstretched ones?

  • And how do emerging neighbourhood governance arrangements connect clearly with existing democratic accountability and place-based decision-making structures?

In this webinar, MV Principal Consultant Sophie Coles will be joined by:

  • Des Murray, Chief Executive, North Lanarkshire Council

  • Alan Webb, Chief Executive, Dumfries and Galloway TSI

  • Mark Bandalli, Managing Consultant Mutual Ventures

They'll share reflections from local government and the third sector on leading through these tensions in practice. Throughout, the emphasis will be on how councils and partners can act as enablers; supporting community-led decisions while helping connect Pride in Place investment into the wider place system.
