Spiral Health C.I.C are the only nurse led, bed-based, intermediate care mutual in the UK, having spun out of Blackpool Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust in 2012. Their aims are:
- Promoting recovery from illness and injury with a high degree of patient choice and involvement;
- Reducing unnecessary acute hospital admissions, resulting in significant financial benefits to the local NHS; and
- Promoting timely discharge and independent living.
Spiral are widely regarded as leading and pioneering care providers in the region and have been nominated for a number of high profile awards in the sector. In 2017, CEO Tracey Bush was featured in the WISE100 list, the first ever index to recognise inspiring and influential women in social enterprise, impact investment and social innovation.
MV have been supporting Spiral, through the Investment and Contract Readiness Fund*, to help them re-negotiate their core contracts and to access investment required to purchase their operating premises – two fundamental steps to ensuring their long-term sustainability.
Our work has involved refreshing their business plan, negotiating with commissioners and engaging with commercial and social investors.
As a result of our support, they partner with EWG (Eric Wright Group charitable support) who purchased the building from Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for 1.2million. The agreement was that they would work solely with Spiral Health C.I.C and they would have a special Landlord – tenant relationship. A loan was provided from EWG to Spiral as part of the overall plan for set up of approximately £150k. The next phase of growth is already agreed to increase the number of beds to over 40, and they are working with EWG to look at other options for growth.
