Mutual Ventures

Investment and Impact

In order to support growth and maintain competitiveness, social enterprises and charities often need to access investment and also demonstrate their social impact in a meaningful way.

Mutual Ventures has extensive experience supporting organisations to become investment ready and to develop new social impact approaches, resulting in organisations securing funding or winning new contracts.

Accessing Investment

MV can support organisations on the whole journey to accessing social investment: from finding the social investment offer that fits your needs to supporting you in developing a business case and brokering relationships with social investors.

Our support to develop a business case includes: undertaking market research, assessing the competitor landscape and market position, identifying routes to market, determining funding requirements (set-up & ongoing costs), testing the financial viability of the proposition, and evidencing social impact.

Through our involvement in the Department for Education’s Social Care Innovation Programme, we have supported partnerships of VCSEs / Local Authorities and Social Investors to explore Social Impact Bonds.

As an approved provider on Big Potential and Access Foundation funds, we have developed strong relationships with a range of social investors. As a result, we have supported individual social enterprises and charities to raise finance through ethical loans and social investment, ranging from £200k to £700k.

Demonstrating Impact

It is becoming increasingly important for independent organisations to be able to demonstrate their impact, in order to remain competitive, win new forms of contracts (increasingly more focused on outcomes) or to access investment.  While commissioners and social investors are proactively seeking evidence of impact, it is also a powerful tool to improve the way you deliver services.

We can support you to develop your social impact management approach: from defining what you are trying to achieve and developing a theory of change, to, capturing, measuring and communicating your impact in a meaningful way. We will ensure that the new practice is embedded in your organisation, and that learning and improvement are at the core of your organisation.

Our social impact approach is set out below:

Recognising our experience and expertise in supporting the resilience and growth of SEs & Charities, we have been approved providers on a number of funds and programmes:

Some examples of our work:

Social AdVentures – a health and wellbeing social enterprise in Manchester, were supported by MV to enhance their ‘contract-readiness’ and revise their business plan.  Our support helped them to re-secure a £324k contract and access a public health framework in Salford.

Spiral Health – are the only nurse led, bed-based, intermediate care mutual in the UK, having spun out of Blackpool Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust in 2012. MV have been supporting Spiral to help them re-negotiate their core contracts and to access investment required to purchase their operating premises.

Community Dental Services (CDS) – are an employee owned Community Interest Company. MV supported the organisation to develop their social impact management approach and maximise its impact in tender responses. As a result of this work CDS have been able to better articulate the uniqueness of their service and secure new contracts, increasing the sustainability of their organisation.
